Local newspapers in the UK have been fading for decades, but now their decline has accelerated to an alarming rate, our new blog post warns.
Writer Andy Weltch, himself a former local newspaper journalist, suggests last month's (May 2025) sudden closure of the much respected, 160-year-old South London Press shows no title is safe.
And he quotes figures which show almost 300 have gone in the last 20 years.
But lost titles are only part of the story, he says, as many papers continue to operate as pale shadows of their former selves, filled with content created by small teams of journalists, covering multiple titles from regional hubs.
In the blog post, he looks at the benefits of local newspapers to their communities and wider society as well as what might be done to help.
