Designer, artist, and long-time Weltch Media collaborator, David Hopkins has offered a fresh insight into a major motorsport event half a century ago.

The World Powerboat Championships were held in Cardiff Docks in 1975, and Dave has captured the event's thrills, dangers, and quirks in a guest post on our award-winning companion hyperlocal site, Rhiwbina Info.

Dave was an art student at the time, and he focused on the championships for a design project over the summer of 1975.

In words and photos, Dave captures the racing itself and the backdrop - Cardiff's once thriving docklands, then in a sad state, many years before the investment and gentrification, which created the new-look Cardiff Bay.

"Some of the photographs I took show the wasteland that Cardiff docks used to be, but even though the quality and sharpness may not be what I had hoped for, it was all part of the learning experience" he wrote.

"And they provide a record that wouldn’t otherwise exist".

We're big fans of motorsport. So, if you’re in the game and need PR, communications, publications, training, web content, or video, get in touch and let’s see how Weltch Media can help.
