In Arts & Entertainment

After being much delayed by the pandemic, Blackeyed Theatre’s production of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is now on a major tour of the UK.

Our companion hyperlocal website Rhiwbina Info was there to review the opening night of its Cardiff visit this week, declaring it to be “an intense, powerful and thought-provoking piece of theatre – challenging, but accessible, and brilliantly performed by a highly talented cast”.

The reviewer, our senior consultant Andy Weltch, highlighted the outstanding and versatile cast of four, led by Blake Kubena in the title roles and Paige Round, playing all the female roles.

He also gives a special mention to movement director Eric Ortuno and the actors involved in “a stunningly memorable scene at the end of Act 1. Brilliantly played out in slow motion, we see Hyde’s violence in all its bloody horror, as the doctor’s walking cane becomes his alter ego’s deadly weapon”.

The play can be seen at the New Theatre, Cardiff until Saturday (13 November), before it moves on to Leamington Spa, Halifax, Southport, Wolverhampton, Aberystwyth, Henly-on-Thames, and Basingtoke. After a Christmas break, the tour resumes with more dates from January to May.
