From pandemic pastime to the screen

A new post on the Piece of Pink Pie arts and entertainment blog explains how the upcoming animated short film A Fish Out of Water started off as a piece of flash fiction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Writer Andy Weltch says he took advantage of the unexpected free time to dabble in some creative writing by producing very brief stories or scenes.

"As I played around with them, they took on some commonalities – set in South West England in the 1890s (or a slightly reimagined version of it), and featuring as their central character, an investigator, a journalist of sorts, who seeks out tales of the strange and unexplained," he writes.

The character gained a name, Henry Godliman, and a backstory. And now, several years later, he is to feature in an animated film version of one of those stories.

The post tells how A Fish Out of Water could have been a live-action film, how the cast and crew were recruited, and how the short film is now well into production.
