A masterclass from one of our most respected actors

A new production of Robert Bolt's award-winning play A Man for All Seasons, starring Martin Shaw, landed in Cardiff this week on its UK tour.

Our companion local news site Rhiwbina Info was invited to the opening night at the New Theatre on Tuesday (6 October).

Set in Henry VIII's court, it focuses on Sir Thomas More's moral dilemma, when he becomes convinced that his friend the king is on a course to break God's law.

Reviewer, Andy Weltch, said: "Martin Shaw excels as Sir Thomas More – scholar, ambassador, lord chancellor and friend of the king - whose stubborn commitment to his conscience leads him and his family into conflict with the state. And it's a conflict he could never win."

He added: "Shaw commands the stage, not with bluster and big gestures, but with a quiet authority. It's an absolute masterclass from one of our most respected actors - all the more impressive because, incredibly, he is now in his 80s".

A Man for All Seasons is at Cardiff's New Theatre until Saturday (10 October), when it moves on to Bath.
