Our production team is making great progress on our animated film A Fish Out of Water, and today we can reveal more superb artwork.
The sign outside The Wild Rover beer house in a small Devon coastal town in the 1890s, has been created by illustrator and designer, Anthony Richards, who researched pub signs of the period, before he set to work.
"Specifically I was looking into how I should colour the sign," he said. "I found that a lot of signs in the late 1800s would use vibrant colours to attract attention. "But I didn't want to make it too vibrant so it would fit in with the rugged aesthetic we're going for. So, I toned it down by weathering the sign with rust effects and by making it appear damaged, leaving it dangle with the sea breeze."
Writer-producer Andy Weltch added: "This is another stunning piece of work. I love that it also brings to mind The Hound of the Baskervilles - the Sherlock Holmes story, set in a similar time, on the moors a few miles inland from our beer house."
The sign has been brought to life in this animated loop by our animator and director Matthew Creed.
Last month, we revealed Anthony's art for the harbour scene at the opening of the film, and before that, the background art for The Wild Rover's bar, and in the summer, we shared his artwork for four of the film's main characters - Henry Godliman (voiced by Robert Daws), Lizzie Shepherd (Francesca Louise White), Joseph Carhart (Richard Oliver), and Sarah Babb (Samantha Hudson).
A Fish Out of Water is described as 'a Victorian tale of the fantastical and bizarre' and is set in an alternative version of the 1890s.
The script, by Andy Weltch and Robert Lancey from Andy's original story, has already been selected in two international competitions, and you can find more about it on the film's IMDb page.
