Torquay United Women bowed out of the Devon Cup yesterday (Sunday 16 October) in a hard-fought first-round game with higher-level Exeter City Women, which saw our sponsored player Danni Wyatt leave the field with a hip injury.

Last season, Torquay sensationally beat Exeter in the final of the competition, which has traditionally been dominated by the county’s National League teams, Exeter and Plymouth.

Danni described yesterday’s game as “a real battle on the pitch, lots of physical challenges and demanding play. We went toe to toe with Exeter City and even in moments looked to be the side on top.”

Torquay had a penalty kick saved by City goalkeeper Abbi Bond in the 13th minute, after Ellie Bishop was fouled in the penalty area.  And Exeter went ahead after 28 minutes, against the run of play, when Connie Pengelly’s long-range shot somehow squeezed under Torquay goalkeeper Konnie Kleczkowski.

Danni came off in the second half after a nasty collision with an Exeter player left her with an injured hip. And Exeter went further ahead at 63 minutes when Zoe Watkins scored from the penalty spot.

“It really was a game that could have gone either way,” said Danni. “We competed and stood up to a team a league above us and did not look to be out of place –  a massive takeaway for us. We will have our opportunity to take back the devon cup next season but for now we wish City all the best in their run.”

Weltch Media first sponsored Danni in the 2017/18 campaign, when she helped Torquay to third place in the South West Women’s Premier League and to the final of the Devon Cup and won the goal of the season award. Last season she helped Torquay to a sensational victory in the Devon FA Cup Final and was named club player of the season.

Danni is due to make her 100th career appearance for the club this season. In 2020, she was among our friends who featured in the popular comedy promo video With a T.
